2014 Latta Wines "LATTA LATTA" GSM

524 cs. made.  $30/btl.

94 pts. Wine Enthusiast Editor's Choice

Composed of 50% Grenache, 46% Mourvedre and 4% Syrah in homage to the great Rhone wines that inspire us. This garnet wine has the mineral, savory and bright cherry aromatics of Grenache, the deep meaty earthy wildness of Mourvedre and just the right amount of our funk-laced floral Syrah.

Approximately 3.2 tons/acre sourced from two very special sites in Washington, Upland Vineyard and Freewater Rocks Vineyard. A lengthy maceration with 60% stems and 40% whole berries were fermented on native yeast and punched down by hand for 29 days before pressing.  This blend is aged in neutral 500L and 228L barrels for 22 months before bottling.

2014 Latta Wines Grenache Upland Vineyard

271 cs. made. $40/btl.

94 pts  Wine Enthusiast

A vibrant deep ruby-colored wine, it exhibits mineral, underbrush, garrigue, bright cherry and raspberry aromatics. Intense, vibrant, and lingering on the palate, our Grenache exudes a rich sanguine quality with fine-grained sweet tannins. Great care is taken in the vineyard to produce the finest fruit possible.  Many thinning passes and removal of the shoulders of the cluster to concentrate the full expression of Upland Vineyard. Crop load balance is the key to this wine's concentration, a judicious 3.2 tons/acre. A lengthy maceration with 60% stems and 40% whole berries lend wildness to the aromatics.  This 100% Grenache is aged in neutral 500L puncheons for 22 months before bottling.

Upland Vineyard is a rolling extremely sloped site located in the Snipes Mountain AVA.  Snipes Mountain was named for Ben Snipes, an early Yakima County pioneer who built a house at the base of a mountain in the 1850s. The area was first planted in 1917 by Washington State wine pioneer William B. Bridgman. The vineyard on Snipes Mountain was one of the first to plant Vitis vinifera in Washington. Snipes Mountain is a seven mile long anticline ridge created by fault activity. The "peak" is 1,290 feet high, rising from the floor of the Yakima Valley with unique, rocky soils, known as aridisols.  Soil deposits below the area are composed of gravels and sediments left by ancient river beds, deposits range in size from a fist to a football. The rocky composition of this warm site provides the backbone of our Grenache block from Upland.

2014 Latta Wines Malbec Northridge Vineyard

253 cs. made. $50/btl.

93 pts Wine Enthusiast

This opaque purple/black wine has a soaring perfume of mineral, lavender, exotic spices, incense, blueberry, licorice, and dusty cocoa. Layered and structured, this effort will see benefit from 4-5 years of additional cellaring and should drink well for the next 15-20. Our Malbec produced here amid the struggle of a warm site with gravelly soils rich in iron and calcium, starts as supremely concentrated fruit.  Yields were 2.9 tons/acre, fermented native with maceration at 39 days.  The wine then went to barrel for 22 months in 40% new french oak.

Northridge Vineyard was planted in 2003 in the Wahluke Slope AVA of Washington State.  This exceptional site is a warm plateau composed of ancient soil and gravel is located in the foothills of the Saddle Mountain range at the upper reaches of the AVA boundary.  The vineyard resides on a gentle south facing slope with a north/south vine row orientation.  The topsoil here is less than a foot deep giving way to a gravelly mix of basalt and caliche. The elevation, ~1200 ft., and slope of the site allows this warm high desert plateau to cool off dramatically in the evening, producing swings of 40- 50 degrees in the summer, allowing the Malbec to ripen perfectly without losing its balanced acidity.

2015 Latta Wines Roussanne Lawrence Vineyard

201 cs. made.  $30/btl.

2014 94 pts. Wine Advocate, 93 pts. Wine Enthusiast

Bright yellow gold white wine, with meyer lemon, notes of hay, pronounced salinity, and petrichor. We sprawled the west side of the vine rows to keep sunburn out and freshness in. A cropload of 3.6 tons/acre kept acid and sugar in balance with Lawrence vineyard’s trademark intensity. The Roussanne was whole cluster pressed and fermented native in barrel, a mix of barriques and puncheons with 15% new French oak from Jupille. The wine rested in barrel for 16 months until bottling.

Lawrence vineyard is a cool site overlooking the Royal Slope and the Saddle Mountains to the south. The Roussanne block sits at 1450 feet of elevation in Taunton silt loam soils that give way to broken basalt. The sloped elevation of Lawrence gives it protection from frost that wreaks havoc in vineyard sites lower on the slope. The long cool growing season is ideal for serious white wine such as this Roussanne.
